3D tracking of particles in a dusty plasma by laser sheet tomography

The collective behavior of levitated particles in a weakly-ionized plasma (dusty plasma) has raised significant scientific interest. This is due to the complex array forces acting on particles, and their potential act as in-situ diagnostics environment. Ideally, three-dimensional (3D) motion many should be tracked for long periods time. Typically, stereoscopic imaging using multiple cameras combined with particle image velocimetry (PIV) used obtain velocity field yet this method limited by its sample volume short time scales. Here we demonstrate different, high-speed tomographic capable tracking individual particles. We use scanning laser sheet coupled single camera. are able identify track tens over centimeter length scales several minutes, corresponding more than 10,000 frames.
